As part of the City’s revival to the East River Esplanade, Pier 15 was transformed from a derelict wharf into a vibrant public space, featuring a glowing lighting grid a half acre in size that softly illuminates at night. Behind the installation was the EGG Electric Team, furnishing the exterior fixtures for a breathtaking array of planting and public spaces. Turner construction selected EGG for our expertise in providing precision electric for some of NYC’s most recognized public spaces, and Pier 15 was no exception. Our scope included a new power service to run the Pier, as well as watertight fixtures for an infinity stair that stretches out into the sea.
EGG Electric developed a streamlined and efficient manpower plan and sequence of installation to undertake the expanse of lighting, allowing the project to run smoothly and complete on schedule. Other key challenges we overcame included adeptly hiding the electrical system within the exposed steel frame of the pier, leaving only the clean lines of the architecture in view. Working on a pier that is so open to the elements brought its own challenges, and required careful safety planning for our electricians, and logistics planning for our construction sequence.
The Pier 15 project opened to the public on time, electric ready and the result was critically admired. An even more satisfying accomplishment was after Hurricane Sandy struck NYC, only minor repair work was required for the Pier to be up and operational – a testament to the quality of resilient construction achieved with Turner. The EGG Electric team is proud to have made Pier 15 possible.
Noteworthy:
EGG engineered and furnished the pavilion ceiling lights in a “plug and play” fashion, so entire fixtures can be quickly unplugged for maintenance by the City of New York, without affecting any of the remaining lighting.
